Reconciliation means that nobody is left out. That is also true of our website. We want everyone to be able to read about our work, contact us and donate: people who are blind or have low vision, people who cannot use a mouse, people who read in Arabic, French, German or English, and readers in Lebanon and Syria on weak mobile connections.
We do this out of conviction and follow the international standard for accessible websites, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
How far we are
This website partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 AA. The pages we write today meet the standard as far as we can test it. Some older content does not yet; it is listed below.
What we have done
- Structure: every page has clear headings, landmarks and a link to skip straight to the content, so that screen readers can move through it quickly.
- Keyboard: all menus, buttons, photo galleries and forms work without a mouse, with a clearly visible focus frame.
- Languages: each page tells assistive technology which language it is in. Arabic pages run from right to left.
- Readable text: colours have enough contrast, and text can be enlarged to 200 % without anything being cut off. On a narrow phone screen nothing has to be scrolled sideways.
- Photos: every photo has a short description for people who cannot see it, including the older ones from our previous website. If a description is wrong or missing, please tell us.
- Calm pages: nothing moves or plays by itself. Videos start only when you click them. If your device asks for reduced motion, the website respects it.
- Light pages: no web fonts and only a small visitor counter without cookies, so pages load quickly even on slow connections.
- Testing: we check all pages with the automated tool axe-core and test by hand with the keyboard. The website has not yet been tested by people who use a screen reader every day; we would welcome their help.
What is not yet accessible
- Older PDF documents: annual reports and other older PDFs are probably not fully readable with a screen reader. If you need one of them in an accessible format, write to us and we will send you the content.
- Videos and audio: our videos have no captions or transcripts of our own yet. YouTube sometimes offers automatic captions.
- Arabic translations: they were made with the help of software and have not yet been read by a native speaker. Where they are unclear, the English version is authoritative.
- Spam protection: the contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile. It usually works invisibly, but may occasionally ask you to confirm with a click. If it stops you, write to us by e-mail instead.
Tell us about a barrier
Did you find something you cannot read or use? Please tell us, in any of our four languages: by e-mail to contact@reliefandreconciliation.org or through our contact form. Tell us which page it is and what went wrong. We will fix it as soon as we can, or send you the information in another way.
