This was the summer

Volunteers in solidarity with Syria and Lebanon

In the heart of Akkar, the most-northern region of Lebanon: Bkarzla. A small Maronite village surrounded by olive orchards in a mixed area where Christians and Muslims are living side by side.

But hidden below the trees are the first signs of the biggest refugee crisis since the end of World War II: informal settlements of Syrian refugees. More than 10 million have lost their home. About 2 million have fled to Lebanon.

When we zoom in we see at the outskirts of the village the first R&R Peace Centre, which opened in July 2013, only six months after our establishment. It serves as open house for the youth of all communities.

The Peace Centre is our central activity hub where we provide education and psychosocial support to Syrian refugees and Lebanese alike. It is also the home of our international volunteers.

This summer 2014 saw the second edition of our special summer programme Ramadan Volunteers. 21 short-term volunteers from around the world joined our team for a minimum stay of a month.

It was a cheerful crowd! In this picture united are volunteers and children from very different backgrounds: Sunnis, Shiites, Alawites and Christians united! In our work, we are combining peacebuilding with humanitarian aid.

This summer 2014 saw the second edition of our special Ramadan Volunteers Programme. From the beginning of July till the end of September, 21 international volunteers stayed at our Peace Centre in Bkarzla (North Lebanon) in solidarity with Syrian refugees and Lebanese in need. We united people from around the world and from all confessions around this common cause and we worked hard to bring more Syrians back into school. By now, we could increase the total reach of our educational activities to more than 700 students. A great thank-you to all our volunteers and staff members for this tremendous job! And a thank-you also to our donors from around the world who made it possible.
